Sustainability

Learn about our approach to sustainability

It was in 2018 that furnipart took its journey towards more sustainable production to a whole new level. Thus far, this journey has resulted in certification according to the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard of both our existing range and products in an exciting new material.

We are well aware that our knobs and handles alone cannot save the world, but we are taking small steps in the right direction and proving to ourselves and to the industry in general that there are different ways of doing things.

The results that we achieve as our journey progresses lay the foundations for other sustainable initiatives that can help us and the industry as a whole to understand how to generate as little environmental impact as possible.

Through our business procedures, we are committed to demonstrating that sustainability can easily become a natural part of a visionary enterprise. Not because it boosts turnover, but because it is quite simply the right thing to do.

Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard

All our chrome and anodised aluminium profiles have been certified to bronze level under the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard since 2018. As a part of this process, inspectors visited our production facility in China to evaluate and document the sustainability of our products. The Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard is based on stringent screening requirements, and every step in our process to manufacture aluminium profiles has been thoroughly examined and documented.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard adopts a different perspective on design and production. Instead of following the traditional view that products should be sustainable from cradle to grave, the new approach rates products according to the extent to which they can be safely assimilated into new life cycles when they no longer fulfil their original purpose. This is why we are particularly pleased to have been awarded this certification. In the long term, we are committed to making a contribution that is actively positive – rather than simply “less negative”.

Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard – zamac handles

In March 2022, we could proudly announce that all our zamac handles in the colours inox and matt black have now been Cradle to Cradle certified. This means that a total of 75% of our products have now been certified at bronze level. Our work with Vugge til Vugge ApS, who undertakes the certification process, is by no means over as we need to be re-certified every alternate year. We must be able to document progress in our work in order to be re-certified.

OceanIX

The two attractive handles – Plato and Square – made of recycled plastic can trace their roots back to a location other than furnipart, so come with us on a trip to West Jutland, Denmark. Based in the Danish town of Lemvig, PLASTIX is a small company that has developed trail-blazing technology which makes it possible to re-use plastic from abandoned fishing nets, for example, and from other plastic material used in the maritime industry. The oceans of the world are experiencing a growing problem in the form of nets, trawls and other plastic material that is simply dumped in the water.

The majority of this pollution is attributable to poor onshore handling of waste, but this unfortunately translates into a growing mass of plastic – both on dry land and in the seas. If this plastic is not collected and reused, more and more plastic needs to be manufactured and used, which naturally means continued extraction of oil.

PLASTIX receives the plastic material collected and passes it through a cleaning process before converting it into the plastic granulate material called “OceanIX”, which can then be used to manufacture new products. Our two handles made of OceanIX are manufactured in our local area. Once the handles have been moulded and quality assured, they are packed in biologically degradable plastic bags ready for shipment to our customers – directly from Denmark to all parts of the world.

As mentioned above, we know that our handles cannot save the world on their own, but they do enable you to make a decision that helps save our planet’s precious resources.
